A blogpost about the Tourism Innovation Map Austria (TIM)

How it all started…

“The start of the Tourism Innovation Map (TIM) was triggered in 2018 by the topics of digitization and learning in Austrian tourism. Due to the fact that Austrian tourism is very small-structured and fragmented, there are many small-scale initiatives. If you imagine the small, family-run business, it’s not part of their everyday life to be in touch with these things. And then we had the idea to create an interactive map that allows you to find current, innovative projects in tourism. Be it a chat-bot, a voice assistant, new data visualizations.

Why is this initiative innovative?

TIM is a project of the Innolab Next Level Tourism Austria (NETA) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Regions and Tourism. Next Level Tourism Austria is operated by Austria’s national tourism marketing agency and acts as a central innovation hub for the national tourism industry.

The map’s main goal is to make digitization projects in domestic tourism visible. It also promotes cooperation, the use of synergies and joint learning within the industry, and provides a comprehensive overview of digitization projects in the country.

TIM was first presented in February 2020 in Vienna. Since then, TIM has accumulated a list of 42 projects from nine states, divided into various categories such as ‘New Interfaces, Automation, API, Analysis and Data Management’. For each project, the current status, a contact person and, of course, a project description are recorded.
